A recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association revealed troubling news: pedestrian fatalities have risen 77% between 2010 and 2021 compared to other traffic-related deaths. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rate of these fatalities increases during the fall and winter months. In Florida between 2012 and 2021, pedestrian fatalities accounted for 21.5% of total traffic deaths.
In our area, pedestrian safety continues to be a top concern. So far this year from January 1, 2023, to July 27, 2023, in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, there have been 12 pedestrian fatalities. Last year the total for all of 2022 was 16.
