Many of us assume that we share the roadways with drivers who carry adequate automobile insurance. It’s the law, right? However, the minimum that the law requires leaves us very vulnerable.
According to the Insurance Research Institute Council, in 2019 12.6% of motorists nationwide did not have any auto insurance. In Florida, the percentage was even higher—20.4%. And many of those who had coverage did not carry any bodily injury (BI) coverage at all—that’s the coverage that will pay YOUR bills if that driver hits you and causes harm. A lot of drivers with bodily injury coverage carry the bare minimum of $10,000.
Adding uninsured motorist (UM) coverage to your automobile insurance is important if you are involved in a car accident with one of these drivers who does not have insurance or who has insufficient coverage. UM pays if you, your passengers, or family members are hit by someone who does not have insurance or has inadequate coverage to pay for the damages they cause.
